Corners
Students move to different corners of the room to express their preferences and then interact with classmates with similar preferences, and listen to ideas of those with different perspectives.
Steps:
1. Teacher announces three or more corners.
2. Students think about, then write down their corner selection.
3. Students move to their corners.
4. Teacher provides interaction question.
5. Pairs are formed within each corner.
6. Pairs share using Timed Pair Share or RallyRobin.
7. Teacher calls on students from each corner to share reasons with the class.
8. Students may be asked to paraphrase reasons of those from other corners using RallyRobin.
Social Skills: Greeting/Departing, Taking Turns, Taking a different perspective, Working with others.
Good For: Creating habits of mind, frequent review. Allowing student movement, reducing fear of failure and anxiety.
Ideas for Class: Classbuilding (find out about classmates), Any Review of content, Value/Opinion questions. Favourite drinks, Favourite cartoon, Favourite place to visit, Favourite food, I would rather be.. ‘Career choices’, ‘Members of a band: drummer etc’
